Fundraiser to Save Rail Trail Along Shepaug Set for July 24
At Mine Hill Distillery with Wood-Fired Pizza, Drinks, Live Music and Silent Auction
The Roxbury Land Trust is planning a special evening in support of the beloved Kress Family Trail at the Orzech Family Preserve. The fundraiser will benefit the land trust’s $100,000 “Save Our Rail Trail” campaign, dedicated to restoring and stabilizing a section of the Shepaug River riverbank that threatens the future of this treasured community trail.
Located near Roxbury’s iconic blue barns, the Kress Family Trail is a favorite destination for hiking, dog walking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Shepaug River. Recent storms and erosion have significantly weakened the riverbank beneath the historic rail trail, creating an urgent need for restoration.
To support this critical project, the Roxbury Land Trust will host a fundraising event on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 6:00–9:00 p.m. at The Crooked Rail at Mine Hill Distillery. Guests will enjoy craft cocktails, wood-fired pizza from the New Haven Pizza Truck, live music by the Tom Scarola Band and an opportunity to learn more about the restoration effort. Tickets are $75 per person and include pizza and one drink, with additional beverages available for purchase.
In addition, the event will feature a silent auction with many unusual items, including paintings by local artists Tom Yost, Phil Stone, Didier Malaquin, Tom Fazio and others; artwork by famed cartoonist and illustrator Barry Blitt, who has created more than 100 covers for The New Yorker; a golf outing at Bull’s Bridge Country Club; a private catered dinner for 10; fajitas, margaritas and maple syrup making at the century-old Roxbury Falls Maple barn for up to a dozen people; Airbnb stay at Anne Coffin’s farmhouse in Roxbury; hand-turned wooden bowl by Charlie Jackson; framed photograph of Good Hill Preserve by Joe Godfrey; gift certificates to Maple Bank Farm, Riverbank Farm and Ox Hollow Farm; private wine class at Total Wine; tasting experience at Mine Hill Distillery; geology hike; nutrition consultation with Alison Birks; private screening with DVD at Bank Street Theater; concert at March Farms; gift baskets and much more.
Funds raised will directly support engineering, construction, and riverbank stabilization work to help preserve this important recreational and conservation resource.
“Whether you’re a longtime trail user, conservation supporter, or simply looking for a fun summer evening, we invite you to join us,” said John Smoliga, president of the land trust. “Together, we can help protect one of Roxbury’s most cherished trails and ensure it remains open and accessible for generations to come.”
Since it was established in 1970, the Roxbury Land Trust has preserved approximately 4,200 acres of farmland, woodlands, wildlife habitats, watercourses, wetlands and open space in Roxbury and neighboring communities. The non-profit organization maintains 32 preserves with 32.5 miles of hiking trails, three active farms and historic iron and granite mines, as well as offers a range of educational programs.
